History of Speech Recognition Software
The invention of speech recognition software started in 1936 when AT&T’s Bell Labs produced the first electronic speech synthesizer called the Voder. In the late 1940s, the U.S. Department of Defense sponsored the first academic pursuit in speech recognition with its goal of intercepting and decoding Russian messages; however, the project was not materialized due to failure in creating a program that could recognize words. In 1952, researchers at Bell Labs had developed an Automatic Digit Recognizer or AUDREY. Although this recognizer could achieve 97 to 99 percent accuracy, its effectiveness was dependent on a number of factors such as limiting the speaker’s vocabulary from one to nine digits, pausing 350 milliseconds between words and adjusting the device according to the speaker’s speech profile. Over the next two decades of research and study, researchers spent a considerable amount of money with little success; so that in 1969, John R. Pierce, the executive vice-president of Bell Labs and one of the pioneers in satellite communication, expressed his disappointment by writing a letter to the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America that the project was just a waste of time and money. Pierce’s letter marked the end of Bell Labs’ research project for nearly a decade. Despite the reported failure, the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency or DARPA established the Speech Understanding Research (SUR) program in 1971 to develop a computer system that could handle at least 1,000 words and could understand continuous speech. In 1976, the Carnegie Mellon University developed the Harpy, which recognized a thousand-word vocabulary and supported a connected speech; however, Harpy was a slow system that could only process a four-second sentence in five minutes. As research continued, Harpy became the model of the following improved speech recognition systems. In 1982, Covox launched the first commercial speech-recognition product. Also in the same year, Dragon Systems was founded. Dragon introduced the speech recognition software to the market in 1997, which is now known as the Dragon Naturally Speaking software.
